That said, some fundamentals haven't changed. You get what you pay for, and the cheapest part often ends up as the most expensive repair.

Why the Wiring Harness Matters More Than You Think

After the alternator experience, I started paying attention to which brands our shop recommended and which brands made them wince. One fleet buyer I talked to brought up the wiring harness.

Price the failure, not the part. The $32 thermostat that took out a $2,100 head gasket was the most expensive $32 I've ever spent. When you're comparing parts, ask what the replacement part can take with it when it fails.

Buy from brands that build OEM parts. Companies like Delphi don't get into automaker factories by accident. They meet tolerances the aftermarket sometimes doesn't. I'm not saying every part has to be the most expensive one on the shelf. What I'm saying is that the old "parts are parts" advice belongs in the past. At least, that's been my experience with our fleet.
