These are the questions I get from shop owners and production guys before they place an order. I've made expensive mistakes on most of them. Not because the parts were bad—because I didn't stop to ask the right question first. Fair warning: I'm the guy who documents his own screwups. A lot of these tips came out of my mistake log—the one my team gets to read at training.
1. Is the Delphi MF0024 mechanical fuel pump the right replacement for my engine?
Check the OE part number before you do anything. The Delphi MF0024 is a mechanical fuel pump, but 'mechanical' doesn't mean one-size-fits-all. It has to match the mounting flange, the arm or lever if the application uses one, and the fuel line connections. When I first started doing these, I assumed a new pump would bolt on if the brand was quality. That's how I made a $300 mistake in 2022—the flange angle was slightly different, and the pump would not seat.
Here's the practical tip: if the pump won't sit flush, don't force it. On many mechanical pumps, the operating lever has to ride on the camshaft lobe. Rotate the engine until the pump arm has clearance, then install. If it still won't seat, compare the pump arm to the old one—not just the bolt pattern. A gasket or spacer that is too thick can also change the pump arm preload. The new Delphi pump is a solid unit, but it needs to be the right application. Cross-reference before you click.
2. Does the Delphi TL470 steering tie rod end assembly include everything I need?
The word 'assembly' made me think I was done buying tie rods. Not always. The TL470 is a tie rod end assembly—which is not necessarily the complete inner and outer tie rod set. It's the outer end with the ball joint stud and housing. You still need to check whether a new inner tie rod, a jam nut, or a separate boot is required for your vehicle. I once matched a TL470 with an old, rusty inner tie rod. The new end seemed wasted because the old inner had play. The part was fine.
Also, a new tie rod end does not fix a worn steering rack, and it does not mean the alignment is automatically correct. Replace it, torque the castle nut to spec, then get the car aligned. I've seen a tie rod stud fail because someone 'torqued until it felt right.' That is not a torque spec. When you're under the car, count the rotations of the old outer tie rod as you remove it. That keeps you close enough to drive to the alignment shop.
3. Can I use the NGK 23141 oxygen sensor in any car with the same thread?
No. Same thread does not mean same sensor. The NGK 23141 is a specific oxygen sensor with a specific connector and calibration. It might be correct for certain Honda, Toyota, or Nissan applications, but the only way to know is to cross-reference your vehicle's OE number. Do not splice wires and hope.
I learned this on a car that threw a code after I installed a sensor I 'knew' fit. The sensor had the right thread and the right wire count, but it was not the right signal type. The ECM didn't like it, fuel trims went weird, and the customer got to smell my mistake for a week. Some sensors are wideband; some are narrowband. They are not interchangeable. If you need an OE-style replacement, stick with the exact listed application. If you need a universal sensor, buy a universal sensor. Don't turn a specific part into a universal one with a pair of pliers.
4. Why are Honda crankshaft position sensors not always the real problem?
This is the one that makes me want to write a checklist for everyone. The Honda crankshaft position sensor can fail. Absolutely. But in at least two of my personal repair stories, the sensor wasn't the problem. The wiring was.
One time, the new sensor was fine, the timing cover was fine, the battery was fine, and the car still wouldn't start. The actual issue? A corroded connector pin in the engine harness. The old sensor had been damaged by that same bad connection. I replaced the sensor again, repaired the wire, and it started. So glad I checked the harness before ordering a PCM. That would have been a very expensive 'may not fix it' box.
Before you fire the parts cannon, do three things:
- Check the connector for green crud or bent pins.
- Check the wiring between the sensor and the PCM—some crankshaft position sensors have signal wires that get weak at the connector.
- Look at the trigger wheel or tone wheel. A bent or dented trigger wheel can cause a no-start even with a brand-new sensor.
Also, don't trust a replacement sensor just because it's new. A fresh part from the box can still fail, and a good sensor cannot fix a dead main relay, a failed fuel pump, or a broken timing belt. The surprise wasn't the sensor. It was the harness. A 'crankshaft sensor code' does not automatically mean the sensor is the root cause.
5. Half shaft vs CV axle: are they the same thing?
Here's the thing: in front-wheel-drive parts catalogs, 'half shaft' and 'CV axle' are mostly two names for the same part. The full assembly—the shaft, two constant-velocity joints, boots, and joint cages—is often called a CV axle. The same assembly, referred to by its position, is the left or right half shaft. So 'half shaft vs CV axle' is usually not a real comparison. It's a naming overlap.
There are edge cases. Some all-wheel-drive vehicles call the rear shafts 'half shafts' even though they are built differently from a typical front CV axle. And some CV axles look identical but differ in spline count, shaft length, or boot design. The name matters less than the exact application.
If you're at a parts counter, don't just say 'CV axle for a Honda.' Say 'left half shaft for a 2008 Accord V6 with the automatic.' Same thing, less guessing. The VIN is the tiebreaker.
6. Should I buy Delphi and NGK, or go with OEM?
I recommend Delphi and NGK in many cases because both are OE suppliers for a lot of applications. Delphi's fuel pumps and steering components, and NGK's oxygen sensors—these are quality parts. But I won't tell you they're 'better than OEM' for every car, because that depends on the vehicle.
Some vehicle manufacturers use a different OE supplier for a specific part. If you put a premium aftermarket part designed to replace that OEM number, it will usually work. If you put a premium part based on a guess, you're guessing. Do not assume an 'OEM grade' label means it fits every engine ever bolted together.
If you're a shop, keep a cross-reference list. If you're a DIYer, verify the original part number and the fitment note. I've learned the hard way that 'should fit' is not a torque spec.
