On many cars, the tail light and brake light are the same bulb—one dual-filament bulb where the dim filament runs the tail function and the bright filament runs the brake light. On vehicles with separate rear bulbs or LED tail lamps, they aren't. The answer is in the bulb number, and that same number-beats-name habit applies to every aftermarket part I order.
That might sound like a lighting question, but it's really a fitment question. I've spent five years as the office manager at a six-bay independent repair shop, and 'is this the same as that?' is behind nearly every ordering mistake I see. I'm not a technician. I read VINs, quote jobs, and place orders—around $120,000 a year spread across five distributors. The part number matters more than the name
Take the Delphi AF10119 mass air flow sensor. It's one of the sensors I order most, and it covers a range of GM trucks and SUVs from the 2000s. I want to say TrailBlazer and Envoy are in there, but don't quote me on the full fitment list without checking the catalog. That's not me being sloppy—it's the point. The AF10119 shares a connector style and a general body shape with sensors that are not the same part at all.
Mass air flow sensors are the best example I know of the 'looks don't matter' rule. The connector plugs in, but the air-flow calibration is different, so the engine runs poorly without necessarily throwing a code. That's the kind of issue that costs the shop an extra hour of diagnostic time and the customer a second trip. So we order the AF10119 when the application says AF10119, and check the OE number before we hit send.
The Delphi aftermarket catalog lists the OE numbers it replaces, which makes the check faster. It's not the only good brand on the shelf, but it's the one I don't have to second-guess. Since I started matching part numbers instead of shapes, our return rate has dropped noticeably.
If the coolant is already drained, order the whole family
The same discipline applies to the cooling system. A water pump replacement is a classic 'while I'm in there' job. If the pump is off and the coolant is out, adding a thermostat is cheap. Skipping it means draining the system again later—and charging labor twice.
When I quote a water pump, I check whether the pump uses a separate gasket or a water pump seal kit. Some pumps include one, some don't. If the catalog calls for a seal kit, it goes on the estimate. It's a no-brainer: a $20 part can prevent a $400 comeback.
You can spend $20 on a thermostat now, or you can spend the customer's money next season to drain the whole cooling system again. I'd rather do the $20 now.
This is an efficiency thing, not an upsell thing. Every extra cooling system repair costs the shop the same bay twice, and the customer loses another half day. Bundling parts into one order, one labor charge, and one drain cycle is better for both sides. That's the part of my job I actually enjoy.
Electric thermostats are where I slow down. Some newer engines use an electrically heated thermostat that the engine computer can command open early, instead of a simple wax element that opens when the coolant gets hot. They fail differently, cost more, and they get described in odd ways. Last year, a customer asked for a 'Columbus electric thermostat.' I thought it was a brand, so I told him I'd look it up. It turned out he meant the electric thermostat for the SUV he'd bought in Columbus. No catalog is going to translate a phrase like that. The VIN and the OE number did.

My four ordering checks
- VIN and engine code. Year/make/model alone isn't enough. If the same SUV came with two engines, one MAF part number often doesn't cover both.
- OE cross-reference. A listing that doesn't show an OE cross-reference is a red flag, not a shortcut.
- Same-system wearable parts. If the cooling system is open, replace the thermostat and seal kit while the labor cost is zero.
- Bulb number stamped on the housing. Don't order by 'same as the old one' from memory.
Is Tail Light and Brake Light the Same Bulb?
Here's the answer I give at the counter: if the bulb has two filaments, yes—the tail light and brake light are the same physical bulb. If the car uses separate bulbs for tail and stop, no. If it's an LED assembly, usually no, and you're replacing a module or the whole lamp.
Under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108, vehicles must have tail lamps and stop lamps at the rear with minimum brightness requirements, but the functions can be combined in one lamp (Source: NHTSA, nhtsa.gov). That's why a dual-filament bulb is legal and common. On a popular bulb number like 3157 or 7443, one filament is dim for the parking/tail function and the other is brighter for braking. Related single-filament versions, such as 3156 or 7440, have different contacts and won't run both circuits.
Honestly, bulbs are not the reason our shop carries Delphi aftermarket parts—the engine management and thermal parts are. But the habit that keeps me from grabbing the wrong bulb is the same habit that keeps our MAF sensors and thermostats right: don't trust the shape, trust the number. Where This Advice Has Limits

There will always be cases where no aftermarket equivalent exists and the part has to come from the dealer. That's a boundary, not a failure. In this job, saying 'I'm not sure, let me verify' has saved me more money, time, and embarrassment than any confident guess ever did.
