When to Buy Delphi Ignition Coils and Fuel Pumps (and When to Sell the Old Catalytic Converter Instead)

There isn't a single right answer when an ignition coil or fuel pump dies. A coil that needs to last 100,000 miles in a work van is a different decision from the coil that just has to keep a $500 beater alive through one more winter. The same logic applies to the old catalytic converter sitting in the scrap bin. Whether you sell it, when you sell it, and to whom depends on the vehicle, the clock, and what you're trying to accomplish.

I'm the procurement manager at a 14-person independent repair shop. I've managed our parts budget—roughly $180,000 a year—for seven years, negotiated with 30+ vendors, and logged every order into our shop management system. I've also sold my share of used converters and bought a pile of replacement parts. This isn't a theory piece. It's a framework I use almost every week.

The First Move: Run the Numbers

Before touching a quote, I look at three numbers:

  • What the vehicle is worth today (private-party value, not the owner's hopes)
  • What the repair actually costs, including labor and downtime
  • What the vehicle earns per day if it's a work truck or commercial ride

If a truck earns $150 per day, a two-day wait for a part costs $300 before labor. The cheapest part in that scenario can become the most expensive by Friday. On the other hand, if the vehicle is a 2002 sedan with a rusted frame, the cheapest coil online is still too much if the car only has four months of life left.

That's where the scenarios split.

The Car You'll Keep: Fix It Right, Fix It Once

If the vehicle is low mileage, structurally clean, or has recent major work done, you're not buying a part. You're buying the next three to five years. This is the time to use an OEM-grade replacement rather than a mystery box special.

For ignition coils, I keep the Delphi GN10181 ignition coil in stock. It's not the least expensive coil you can buy, but it's built for the heat and vibration of daily driving. I've seen cheap coils fail in under a year—sometimes within a couple of months. The labor to R&R a coil is the same regardless of the brand, so the total cost of a second repair is much higher than what you saved.

For older carbureted engines, the Delphi MF0072 mechanical fuel pump is a direct replacement that doesn't give you surprises. I'll be honest, I've tested the $18 pump from the parts warehouse. It worked—for about three weeks. Then it seeped fuel and the customer came back annoyed. The Delphi pump has been consistently reliable in our shop for years.

While you're in there, a clean carburetor air filter protects the whole fuel system. If the truck has a transfer tank in the bed, a fresh transfer tank fuel filter is cheap insurance. You can replace a coil, but if the fuel system is sucking in debris, you're setting up the next breakdown.

One thing I do not recommend is skimping on the filter when you upgrade the pump. It feels like an upsell. It's not.

The Beater With a Pulse: When Good Enough Is Right (and When It Isn't)

Not every car needs the highest-priced part. If the goal is to keep a high-mileage daily driver on the road for another year, you can sometimes use a lower-priced brand and accept the risk. But there's one place I'd push back: the ignition coil.

Here's the twist that surprises people: on a beater, a cheap coil can actually cost more than an OEM-grade coil. A coil is not that hard to swap, but it also isn't a five-minute job. If a $25 no-name coil dies in 8,000 miles, you've lost the labor, the tow or the customer's patience, plus the part. That's why for ignition coils in particular, I still reach for Delphi even on old cars. The cost gap between a cheap model and the Delphi GN10181 is often under $20. In exchange, you get a much longer mean time.

For the fuel pump, the calculation is different. A mechanical fuel pump is easier to replace on most old engines, and the failure mode is less dramatic (usually a leak or loss of pressure, not a breakdown). If you're flush against the vehicle's value, a mid-tier pump plus a transfer tank fuel filter is a defensible move. But if it's a hard-to-reach pump that costs a lot of labor, upgrade the part. You don't want to redo that job for a $12 saving.

This is also where the urgency needs to be figured in. If the vehicle makes money, waiting three days for a cheap part is silly. Pay the expedited shipping on the Delphi part and get the vehicle back to work. The premium isn't for speed exactly—it's for certainty. A 'probably by Friday' promise isn't a plan.

The Scrapper: Stop Repairing, Start Recycling

Sometimes the right call is to not repair at all. That's when a failed coil or fuel pump becomes the reason to retire the vehicle. If the repair quote is more than roughly half the vehicle's private-party value, and there's no income benefit or sentimental value, it's a scrap decision.

At that point, the old catalytic converter becomes your best cash crop. Most people don't realize that a used OEM converter can be worth more than the scrap value of the metal shell around it. The precious group metals inside—platinum, palladium, rhodium—are that valuable.

Before you recycle the rest of the car, pull the converter (or make sure the scrapyard isn't going to buy the whole vehicle and pocket the converter value themselves).

Selling the Old Catalytic Converter Without Getting Taken

If you've never sold a used converter, do not call the first buyer listed online. Take a minute to understand the market. Here's the part most people miss:

Buyers quote on the converter family, and then they quote again when they physically see the unit and its markings. If you tell them the code before they give you a price, you lose leverage.

I get quotes from at least three licensed buyers. I supply the vehicle year and the converter condition, but I don't give the exact part code until someone commits to a price range. The spread between buyers is often wider than you'd think.

My state requires commercial scrap buyers to have a license and keep transaction records. The Automotive Recyclers Association has pushed for standardized recordkeeping on converter purchases, and that's the right way to do it. Ask for a written receipt. If you're a business, get paid by check or corporate card. If a buyer wants to pay cash with no paperwork, that's a red flag.

I've tracked every converter we've sold since 2022 in a simple spreadsheet. Prices vary by vehicle and by rhodium/palladium rates, but for the typical sedan and light-truck converters we pull, the payout has ranged from about $40 to $250. Know what your converter is before you negotiate.

The Batch Buyer: How I Order for the Shop

If you're buying for a shop or a small fleet, the decision framework changes again. You're not solving one failure; you're trying to prevent the next one while keeping inventory costs low.

Keeping one or two of each in stock means we don't have to negotiate with a parts store at 4:45 p.m. when a customer's car is on the lift. If you're unsure whether a car is a keeper or a scrapper, run this simple test:

  1. Repair cost (parts + labor) should be less than 50% of the vehicle's private-party value, or the vehicle must earn money when it's running.
  2. Future costs: have major systems (transmission, frame, suspension) already been done, or is this the first repair in a chain?
  3. Time pressure: if the vehicle is a daily earner, the price of the part is a smaller number than the cost of delay.

Once you have those answers, the part choice becomes easier. For a keeper, spend the money on the Delphi part. For a workhorse on its second life, calculate the total cost of a failure, not just the part price. For a scrapper, skip the repair and get the converter ready to sell.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer. But if you actually price out the downtime, the difference between 'the cheapest part' and 'the right part' gets a lot clearer. I'd rather pay a little more for a part that shows up on time and lasts, than save $20 and find out the hard way. The right part isn't always the cheapest part on the shelf—it's the one that gets you back on the road and keeps you there.
